Locus Amoenus

Saint Michel du Bosc, a charming estate and former priory (1153 AD) welcomes you warmly. This special place, which we call Locus Amoenus (the good place), in the heart of a regional nature park in Normandy offers peace and quiet within the centuries-old monastery walls of the priory. It covers more than 6 hectares, there’s an orchard with fruit trees, a pond and a vegetable garden. It is the only house on a medieval road named after it. For centuries, it has lain peacefully, far from the main roads in the municipalities of Lithaire and Varenguebec. Its dominant location offers views of the Marais de Cotentin and Mont Eclantin. Surrounded by greenery and the sound of frogs, crickets, and singing birds, you cannot help but unwind here.

Retreat and Recharge

The location is ideal for various activities, the surroundings exude tranquility, while you are still close to the interesting sights of the Cotentin to discover authentic Normandy. From Mont Saint-Michel to Cape Cotentin, via the Côte des Isles (Jersey), Granville, Bayeux and the Normandy landing sites, to The Hague in the north – a region full of culture, cliffs, headlands, beaches, and recreational opportunities. Here you can relax, retreat, gather friends and family around you and find inspiration. There are daily markets and flea markets every weekend (especially in the summer). The various (calm) beaches are just a 15-minute drive away. You can find numerous riding stables where you can rent horses. Or take a bike ride through the forests of La-Haye-du-Puits - Carentan. L'Etang des Haizes, with its fishing pond, highly recommended for carp fishing, is located near La Haye du Puits.

Mathilde

The renovation of one of the outbuildings, constructed against the old thick monastery wall, into a modern guesthouse is nearly complete. We call this first gîte "Mathilde", after the founder of the priory, Mathilde de Vernon (1135-1209). The photo gallery gives a preview of the accommodation that can house up to 6 people. The 190+m2 consists on the ground floor of a 65m2 open plan kitchen/diner/living, a toilet, bedroom with a double bed (180x200) with an adjoining bathroom. A double door leads to a fenced (1.20 m) terrace on the east side, and on the west side there is access to a second, often sunny terrace.
An old spiral staircase takes you to the upper floor. That’s where you find a bathroom with a shower, double sink, and toilet, a spacious bedroom with a double bed (160x200), and a second very spacious bedroom with two single beds (80x200) that can be joined together.
There is broadband internet, a kamado bbq, ample parking on the premises, and one or two bicycles available to borrow.
